This is one of my favorite techniques to use in the case of negative, unwanted dialogue appearing in my head.
This trick is great not only for stopping negative thinking. It also works great when there are whole type stories in your mind: what can happen if … ..
You know and feel that it is irrational, but you keep on sinking into the negative scenario of events. Maybe you also have situations when you think: I could then act differently, say something else, I should know that it will end this way, etc.
In fact, you only lose time when you allow yourself to spin these theories in your head. You can call this type of thinking unwanted thinking.
Negative thinking and unwanted thinking is really useless in most cases, it takes us a lot of time and consumes our energy.
Therefore, it is worth using this trick:

Just enough.
Maybe you’re surprised. Maybe you think: How can this question stop my negative thinking?
This question clears your mind and restores control. You are no longer listening to your thoughts passively. You do not give in to them. You take away the power to control you. This is a short question: Is this useful? puts your mind in a vulnerable position. Unarmed in relation to you.
So, when, for example, when you feel sad, discouraged, disappointed, lonely and your thoughts like a torn record they give in your head: I feel so unhappy and lonely. I’m fine, I’m failing, I’m so useless, etc. then ask yourself: Is this useful? Are these thoughts useful to me now? Do they serve me? Do they help me?
What will be your answer?
You’ll probably answer: Of course not! These thoughts do nothing good for me.
When do you ask yourself Is this useful? at the same time, negative thoughts stop. This is because, by realizing the uselessness of these negative thoughts, you give yourself permission to let the disc stop.
By asking yourself this question, you are also encouraged to take action. Because when you stop the negative disc, you can focus on here and now and find a reasonable solution in the situation you are in. If the thought of being unhappy is unproductive, what can I do now to feel happy?
